Joining in June 1893, he served in the South African Campaign. On the outbreak of war he was posted to HMS Foxglove (mine sweeper) and was engaged with the Channel Patrol. He afterwards served in the North Sea. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for conspicuous gallantry at sea and was mentioned in despatches in July 1915. He also holds the Queen's South African Medal, the 1914-1815 Star, the General Service and Victory medals, and was recommended for the Mine-sweeping Medal. He was discharged in April 1929.
