Sidney Russell, my great grandfather, was born to George Deacon Shipley and Emma on 10th February 1863 in Alvaston, Shardlow, Derby. He was christened on 18th December 1864. During his childhood the family also lived in Ipswich, London and Bournemouth. By 1881, according to the census, Sidney was living as a boarder and probably as an apprentice, at a bakers in Old Christ Church Rd., 2 Grosvener Place, Holdenhurst, Hampshire. Sidney married Florence (Flora Ann) Driver at St Agnes Parish Church in Bristol in 1887. The address given for both of them was 30, Morgan St., St. Agne (the home of a Mrs. Elizabeth Williams) One assumes they were staying with friends or lodging there as it is doubtful that they would have been living together. Their first child, Harold Edgar George, was born in 1888 at Torquay, Devon. They lived at 1, Roachdale Terrace and Sidney was a confectioner. Hubert Cecil was born in 1892 at Church St. in Fulbourne, Cambs. By this time Sidney was a "master confectioner". Sidney and Florence also had two daughters, Gertrude and Daisy. By 1895 Sidney and family had settled in Bristol - it is not known why they came to live here although Sidney's brother Cecil was certainly here in 1892. ( I wonder if Sidney's father the "evangelist Baptist" was near-by somewhere ; he had left his parish at Breachwood Green in 1888 and a new Baptist church was established very near to where Sidney was living at around that time). Sidney and his family resided at 150 Gloucester Rd. (Pigsty Hill) and ran a business of "confectioners and tea rooms" which had been previously run by "Jaggard and Gummaw". Sadly Sidney died, aged 49, on 11th November 1911 at 150a Gloucester Rd. Florence kept the business going until 1921. Sidney, Florence and their daughter Daisy are buried together at Greenbank cemetery, Bristol.
