Notes
Birth Notes:
Stepney
General:
Mary Ann (Jane) was born in Stepney, London. She was convicted for larceny in November 1850 and transported to Tasmania. On her convict record she is mentioned as being a widow (her maiden name is not given) and also single. Her surname at that time was Bowling/Bolling. No children are listed. She was given a ticket of leave in 1857; married William Neighbour in 1858 and was widowed in 1862. In 1866, under the name of Jane Neighbour , she was charged along with Ann Muir for stealing bacon, pies, dishes and other articles belonging to Mrs. Sarah Butler of Hampden Rd. They were both given six months hard labour. (Jane Neighbour's convict record was added to Mary Bowling's thus confirming that they were the same person) Jane Neighbour married George Shipley on 27th September 1871. She died on 3rd September 1885 of cardiac disease and dropsy. Mary Ann's (Jane's) birth year range, 1815 - 1826, is estimated from her age, given as 32 when she was convicted in 1850, therefore born 1818; 45 when she married George in 1871, giving a birth year of 1826; (If this is correct she would have been 32 when she married William Neighbour in 1858 who himself would have been 61 at the time) and 70 when she died in 1885, making her birth year 1815.
