Mary Ann Deacon, my great great great grandmother was born to James Deacon and Elizabeth in Great Bowden, Leicestershire. She married George Shipley on 6th August 1834 at Great Bowden. He was a batchelor of the parish of Burton Latimer and she was a spinster of Great Bowden. The marriage was witnessed by Jane Shipley (George's sister) and James Deacon . (It is assumed that James was Mary's brother - a James Deacon was born at Great Bowden to James Deacon and Elizabeth in 1814). George signed his name and Mary made her mark. Together they had one son, George Deacon, in December 1835. Mary's husband, George, was convicted of larceny and transported for life to Tasmania in 1837; she is mentioned as "his bereaved wife" in George's mother's petition for clemency in 1847.

She subsequently, and probably bigamously, married John Rowe, giving her father's name as Shipley (it was actually Deacon). John Rowe died before 1881, as in the 1881 census she is living next door to Fanny Shipley in Burton Latimer.
Marriage Notes (George Shipley)
Wednesday
This marriage is listed in the Great Bowden parish register - George is referre d to as bachelor of Burton Latimer: Mary Ann as spinster. George signed his na me and Mary Ann made her mark. The witnesses were Jane Shipley, who signed he r name and James Deacon who made his mark. This could be the James that was b aptised there on 25th September 1814, son of James and Elizabeth. It is assume d at present that he was Mary Anns brother. This information came from Peter Shipley who accessed it at the society of gene alogists. I have a copy of the entry in the parish register.
