Notes
General:
George James Millman, my great grandfather, was born on January 2nd 1869 to James Millman and Mary Wilkins, in Charlton upon Medlock, Lancaster. The 1891 census shows him living with his parents and siblings at 59, Claremont St. Bristol. ( Also present was a visitor - John Jones, grocer's assistant, aged 21, born Swansea, Glamorgan). His occupation was given as cabinet upholsterer. George James married Emma Rich in Swansea, Glamorgan 4th October 1891 - the witnesses were Mary Ann Sewell and John Emmanuel Jones - almost certainly the "visitor" shown at George's home in Bristol in the census earlier that year. On the birth certificate of Marie Rosa in 1896 George's occupation was given a s Master upholsterer. At that time the family were living at 36, Bond St. Swansea. According to family legend Marie was one of 12 children - I know of 10. Presumably two died young. (My uncles were unaware that their mother had been born in Wales although they thought that their grandfather, George James, came from there - which he didn't). By 1900 the family were living in Bristol - George James was an upholsterer at 14 St. Pauls St. and by 1921 he had a wholesale business at 28, Newfoundland St. called Milbury's and the family residence was at 71, Springfield Rd. Cotham. Apparently the business flourished under a labour government in the post war years as they made "utility" furniture - most of George's sons went into the business. From 1951 trade declined due to the expansion of major companies and it finally closed about in the late 1960s.
